How to turn a racquet demo into a test, not a shopping exercise

Start with this check

TWU's racquet test method controls conditions with identical strings, defined impact locations and speeds, and averages from repeated trials. An on-court playtest cannot reproduce that experiment, so borrow its control principles without calling a subjective assessment a laboratory measurement. A demo's first impression combines frame specifications with string condition, grip, ball, test order, and fatigue. Mark the variables you cannot eliminate and repeat the same shots to build a reproducible basis for purchase instead of relying on one spectacular shot.

Try these steps in order

  1. Choose one problem to solve with your current racquet and reduce the field to no more than three candidates. Record each candidate's measured weight, available balance and swingweight information, grip size, string product, and stringing date. Mark a demo with unknown string information or severe notching as “condition unknown.” Do not eliminate it immediately after a poor result; if the frame remains promising, retain it for a retest with the same fresh string as the others.
  2. After warming up, use the same order for every candidate: a 5-minute mini-rally, 20 crosscourt balls, 10 change-of-direction balls, 10 defensive balls, 10 returns, 10 volleys, and 10 serves. Keep rest intervals similar. In each segment, record balls in play, net, long, and frame errors, late preparation, and racquet-face wobble. Replace “good power” with the first-bounce zones produced by the same swing.
  3. Change candidate order within the session and, when possible, change which racquet goes first on another day. Review video to see whether the last racquet tested was disadvantaged by fatigue or whether novelty made you swing harder with one candidate. Keep for the final comparison only racquets that reduce the target problem on average, preserve centered-contact rate and a normal swing late in the session, and cause no unusual discomfort the next day. If string condition could explain much of the difference, match the conditions and playtest again before purchasing.

Bottom line

A good demo is not an experiment that eliminates every variable; it is a process that marks the remaining variables and repeats the same tasks. Recording shot distribution, error type, and late-session centered-contact rate keeps the worn strings in a demo racquet from driving the purchase decision.
