Racquet spec sheets: read these five lines first
A racquet's character comes from head size, balance, swingweight, stiffness, and string pattern together—not from one weight figure.

Start with this check
Head size describes the geometry of the hitting surface; string pattern describes the number and actual spacing of the strings; static weight and balance describe mass and its distribution; swingweight describes rotational inertia; and stiffness describes how readily the frame flexes in a specified test. These values are not independent performance grades, and both measured specifications and feel can change with the strings and grip installed. Do not read one cell in isolation and assume, for example, that a racquet is easy to use because it weighs 300 g. Interpret the specifications as a set to compare with your current racquet.
Try these steps in order
- Write down your current racquet's exact model year, head size, pattern, static weight, balance, swingweight, and stiffness on one line. Mark whether each catalog value is strung or unstrung, and do not guess at unknown fields. Put every new candidate on the same basis. Do not compare a 300 g unstrung specification directly with a 315 g strung specification; when possible, have a shop check the actual demo racquet's weight and balance.
- First inspect the head and the spacing of the center strings, then form a hypothesis about your contact-location spread and desired trajectory. Replace a vague claim such as “a larger head is better” with an on-court question such as “Does it reduce off-center contact when I am late on a defensive ball?” Consider static weight, balance, and swingweight together to decide whether quick preparation or stability at impact is the real issue. A light feel in the hand does not predict maneuverability after 60 minutes.
- With the same string and grip conditions, hit 20 crosscourt balls, 10 fast returns, 10 high balls, 10 volleys, and 10 serves. For each segment, record late preparation, racquet-face wobble, depth distribution, and fatigue. Compare the centered-contact rate and repeated error pattern late in the session, not the best shot at the start. Keep only candidates that reduce the target problem without worsening another essential measure, then test any string adjustment as a separate experiment.
Bottom line
A spec sheet is not meant to declare a winner; it is meant to create hypotheses for a playtest. Compare the five values on the same basis, match the demo's string and weight conditions, and decide from results that remain repeatable late in the session.
