Does a lower RA automatically make a racquet arm-friendly?
Frame stiffness matters, but stringbed stiffness, mass, and contact location all shape the impact you feel.

RA summarizes how readily a frame flexes in a specified test; it does not directly measure every shock transmitted to the hand or any health outcome. A lower-RA frame may tend to be more flexible, but mass, swingweight, vibration behavior, stringbed stiffness, contact location, and grip force all contribute to actual feel. Research also treats upper-limb problems as multifactorial, so it cannot supply a threshold below which an RA is “safe” or establish a treatment effect.
Try these steps in order
- Record the current racquet's exact model year, the source of its RA, and the measurement condition. If retailers list different numbers, do not choose one as the truth; note possible specimen or measurement variation. While symptom-free, define an observable comparison goal such as “off-center impact feels harsh” or “I have to work too hard for depth.” If pain is ongoing, do not begin the playtest.
- A perfect pair differing only in RA is rare, so list differences in weight, balance, swingweight, head size, and pattern as well. Match conditions as closely as possible with the same new string product and gauge and the same grip. Begin relaxed with 10 service-box balls, then hit 15 balls with centered contact, 10 deliberately slightly off-center feeds, and 10 volleys. Record impact feel, ball depth, and any change in grip pressure.
- After 30–45 minutes, play a normal rally and serve, then record both the immediate response and any next-day change. Even if one racquet is more comfortable, do not attribute that result to RA alone; preserve its complete specification and string condition. Keep only candidates that repeatedly improve the target behavior without requiring an unreasonable increase in playing volume. If the difference remains unclear, do not buy solely for the lower RA; inspect string setup, technique, and load separately.
Bottom line
RA is one clue for understanding a frame, not an arm-comfort score. In a short, controlled playtest with the same strings, record contact location, grip force, and the subsequent response, and make a choice only in the context of the complete equipment, technique, and workload.
