Natural gut is made from processed fibers from animal intestine, multifilament bundles many synthetic fibers, synthetic gut usually uses a nylon-centered core-and-wrap construction, and polyester is generally a monofilament. Those structural differences create tendencies in flexibility, elasticity retention, wear, and price, but a material name alone cannot determine a particular product's launch angle or impact feel. Begin not with “Which is best?” but by separating what your current setup lacks from what it must preserve.
Try these steps in order
- For your last three stringing jobs, list the material, gauge in mm, reference tension, and time to breakage or replacement. Even if a string did not break, mark when you stopped liking its response. Define the current problem in one observable sentence, such as “The ball starts going long after one hour,” “The center strings notch quickly,” or “Impact feels harsh late in the session.” Also choose one quality to preserve among comfort, cost, durability, and feel.
- Make the first comparison with the same racquet, stringer, and balls. Play 15 minutes with the reference setup and 15 minutes with the candidate, matching shot count and order—for example, 20 crosscourt rallies, 10 high defensive balls, and 10 serves. For a polyester candidate, record depth and string snapback on fast swings; for multifilament and synthetic gut, record feel and wear on centered and off-center contact; for natural gut, include storage and replacement cost along with the desired response. Judge actual results, not the image associated with the material.
- Decide from net clearance, percentage landing inside the baseline, repetition of the same error, and response changes from one session to the next—not from the single best shot. Do not adopt a candidate if your top priority worsens even when two lesser measures improve. Only after selecting a material family should you adjust gauge or tension one step at a time. If material, gauge, and tension all change together, the cause is unknowable, so leave only one changed variable in each record.
