An angular cross-section or rough surface may affect ball contact, but spin results from lateral string movement and snapback, intersection friction, gauge, pattern, incoming angle, and swing speed together. ITF research likewise treats tension, gauge, string type, head size, and pattern—not shape alone—as variables. A new string's sharp edges can wear with use, so separate the first 10 minutes of feel from the response several hours later.

Try these steps in order

  1. Do not reduce the current problem to “not enough spin.” Record whether the ball hits the net, goes long, or lacks height after the bounce. If swing path changes on every attempt, first establish a repeatable feed drill. Choose round and shaped candidates from the same material family with equal or similar measured gauges. If stiffness information is unavailable, note that the match is not exact, and hold racquet and reference tension constant.
  2. With each candidate, hit 20 same-height partner feeds crosscourt and mark net-clearance and first-bounce zones. When possible, film from behind to confirm that you are not deliberately changing swing speed. Then hit 10 balls lower than usual and 10 balls higher than usual to see whether the shaped candidate helps only at one contact height. Judge bounce height from a repeated pattern with the same balls and court, not from one opponent impression.
  3. At cumulative times such as 1 hour, 4 hours, and 8 hours, inspect edge wear on the center strings, intersection notching, and snapback of a main pushed sideways. If the setup starts well but snapback declines quickly, include that maintenance cost in the decision. Define adoption beforehand as “better trajectory distribution in at least two of three sessions, with an acceptable loss of useful life.” If the difference is small, prioritize price, ease of restringing, and a repeatable swing over shape marketing.

Bottom line

Shape is one of several conditions that create spin. Call a shaped string the better choice only when matched drills show better trajectory and bounce together with acceptable retention of its edges and snapback after use.
