Right After Stringing or the Next Day: When Should You Measure?
An immediate post-stringing reading and a next-day reading are not competing “true” tensions. Strings relax over time after installation, so the key is to choose a repeatable measurement time and record whether the racquet has been played.

Strings begin to undergo stress relaxation and creep during stringing and continue afterward; the initial change varies with material, diameter, pre-stretch, and stringing method. The machine-set reference tension remains a historical process value, while the app reports an estimated current tension at the time of measurement. Stringbed stiffness is a separate result obtained with its own equipment and procedure. There is no universal point, exactly a few hours after stringing, when every product becomes stable, and the first play adds impact and friction to time-dependent change. Mixing measurement times therefore prevents you from separating natural relaxation from change caused by use.
Try these steps in order
- Record the machine-set reference tension, string product and diameter, pre-stretch, and stringing completion date and time on the worksheet. Do not record only the time you received the racquet, because that obscures the true elapsed time.
- Choose a no-play baseline time that you can repeat. For example, use a fixed interval after completion or the next day, but do not treat that particular time as the one true value for every string.
- Before the first measurement, mark the racquet as unplayed and record its storage location and approximate temperature. Add a note if it was left in a vehicle or experienced a large environmental change in transit.
- Measure three times with the same app, input values, racquet support, and excitation point, then save the median as the estimated current tension. If you use equipment that reports stringbed stiffness, record the device and unit in a separate column.
- To observe natural relaxation, compare equal intervals while the racquet remains unused. To observe the effect of use, record the start and end of the first play session and cumulative playing time. Do not calculate an unused next-day reading and a post-match reading as though they covered the same loss interval.
- Build a personal trend for each product by repeating the same schedule across several stringing jobs. Compare small changes with the spread of repeated measurements, and use them for inspection or replacement decisions only when a sharp change recurs alongside abnormal ball response or visible damage.

The key question is not which time is “true,” but which time you can repeat. Preserve the machine-set reference tension and separate the no-play baseline from post-play estimates to compare initial relaxation without overstating it.
