What to Check When Your Shots Land Near the Service Line
Short balls near the service line cannot be resolved solely by low string tension; you must examine the setup, centered contact, and string condition in that order.

Start with this check
Short balls can occur with a stiff or low-energy-return string system, but common causes also include polyester that has become erratic with extended use, low racquet-head speed, contact behind the body, too little forward pace for the amount of spin, heavy balls, and fatigue. Lower reference tension tends to produce a more flexible stringbed and can be a useful depth experiment, but it does not guarantee a large or uniform increase in ball speed. If the player responds by swinging more cautiously, any equipment benefit may be offset.
Try these steps in order
- During 20 comfortable crosscourt rally balls, record the first- and second-bounce locations. Separate forehands, backhands, and defensive situations to identify when the shots become short.
- Record rear-view video to check preparation timing, contact height, racquet-head speed, and finish. Distinguish centered contact from contact near the frame.
- Note the type of ball being used, usage time, court speed, wind, and fatigue in the latter part of the session, and check if the same pattern repeats on other days.
- Check the stringing date, cumulative playing time, notching, how readily the mains return to position, and the estimated-current-tension trend. Do not label the string “dead” from one low reading alone.
- If the issue is narrowed down to a setting problem, alternate between using a racquet with only slightly lowered reference tension and the existing racquet on the same day under the same product, gauge, and stringing conditions.
- Along with depth recovery, record long errors, launch angle, net clearance, arm comfort, and swing effort required for the same depth to determine the overall trade-off.
