Start with this check

Long errors can be related to lower stringbed stiffness or a changed launch angle, but they can also come from late contact, an open racquet face, too little spin for the racquet-head speed, new balls, a fast court, or swinging too hard while fatigued. Higher tension tends to create a firmer response, but it does not automatically improve match accuracy, and research results also include player adaptation and swing changes. Separate balls that fly long through the middle, miss wide, or come from off-center contact before deciding whether the cause is equipment, technique, or tactics.

Try these steps in order

  1. Rally at least 20 balls toward the same target, or use a ball machine, and map the errors by counting balls that finish deep through the middle, wide, on the frame, or in the net.
  2. Record whether the error starts early in the session or develops after fatigue, whether it is only on one side (forehand or backhand), or immediately after replacing the ball with a new one.
  3. Check the racquet face and contact point using side and rear video, and see if the same problem is reproduced in mini tennis. If it decreases immediately with a change in technique, do not conclude that the string is the cause alone.
  4. Check the string product, gauge, stringing date, cumulative playing time, estimated-current-tension trend relative to your baseline, notching, and how readily the mains return to position.
  5. If equipment remains the likely cause, keep the same racquet and string and raise only the reference tension by a small amount at the next restring, leaving another racquet at the existing setting for comparison.
  6. Repeat the same drill before and after the change. Compare long and net errors together with the swing effort required and the impact feel in the arm.

Bottom line

When the ball is long, string tension is the last variable to test; to reproduce the adjustment results, you must check the error map, contact point, environment, and string lifespan.
