Raising tension tends to increase stringbed stiffness in the same racquet and string, but the effect on ball speed and accuracy depends on technique, contact point, and test conditions; a change of a few lb should not be assumed to create a dramatic result. Control is not one material property. It is the size and repeatability of depth, lateral, and height errors relative to a target. Confusing machine-set reference tension, estimated current tension over time, and stringbed stiffness can also misidentify the source of a firm feel. Higher tension is neither treatment nor a substitute for technique.

Try these steps in order

  1. Record the current racquet, string product and diameter, mains/crosses reference tensions, stringing date, cumulative playing time, and baseline measurements. Do not directly compare shots flying long on a worn stringbed with a freshly strung higher-tension setup.
  2. Separate the control problem into long, short, net, left/right, and stroke-specific errors. Define a target zone in advance, then record how many of 10 balls land in it and the average direction of the misses.
  3. Use video or coach feedback to check whether contact point, racquet face, and swing path repeat consistently. Record separately whether the swing becomes shorter under point pressure.
  4. On the same frame, string, and gauge, adjust only one spare racquet by a small amount within the manufacturer’s range. Treat easier depth at lower tension and a firmer response at higher tension as tendencies to test, not guarantees.
  5. At the same elapsed time after stringing, record estimated current tension or stringbed stiffness, then alternate racquet order in the same drill with the same balls and court. Track net, depth, and lateral errors, impact feel, and whether you shortened the swing.
  6. Across two or three sessions, check whether target accuracy improves without added fatigue, discomfort, or loss on other shots. If the difference is small or inconsistent, do not declare an optimum; return to a comfortable, repeatable baseline.

Control is not another name for stiffness; it is repeatable error around a target. Treat higher- and lower-tension effects as tendencies, and compare the reference setting, current condition, swing, and errors to find a useful personal range.
