Does “Dead” Polyester Simply Mean It Has Gone Loose?
Calling a polyester string “dead” does not describe one condition or simply mean it has lost a few lb of tension. Tension change, intersection notching, string movement and recovery, and ball response can change at different rates.

Machine-set reference tension records the initial stringing process; it is not the string’s current value during use. An app can estimate current tension, but it cannot directly measure notch depth, string-to-string friction, or elastic recovery after repeated loading, and stringbed stiffness alone does not describe every aspect of wear. With aged polyester, a lower estimated value, mains that remain displaced, and a sluggish or erratic response may appear together, but no single sign defines the service life of every product. “Dead” is a collective description players use, not a strictly standardized measurement term.
Try these steps in order
- Record the exact polyester product, color, diameter in mm, racquet, mains/crosses settings, stringing date, and first baseline measurement. If no baseline exists, do not back-calculate the original machine setting from an app reading.
- Record calendar age and actual cumulative playing time separately, with a short note on session type and intensity. The same 10 hours can involve different storage, impact frequency, and playing conditions.
- In bright light, photograph several intersections in the center and primary contact zone, checking for notching, coating wear, discoloration, and edge damage. Compare the direction of change with earlier photos instead of judging one intersection.
- Gently move one center main sideways and release it to observe whether it returns. Do not treat this finger test as a precise coefficient-of-friction or remaining-life measurement, and do not pull hard enough to add damage.
- Repeat the estimated-current-tension or stringbed-stiffness measurement at the same location with the same procedure, then compare its trend with the baseline. Use the spread across three readings rather than one sound or a reading from another app.
- If you have a freshly strung racquet with the same setup, alternate the two using the same balls and court. Compare launch angle, net and long errors, lateral misses, and impact feel. If erratic response, discomfort, or deep wear recurs, restring regardless of whether the reading appears low.
Bottom line
“Dead” polyester is not simply loose polyester. Replacement decisions combine elapsed time, estimated current tension, wear, snapback, and shot results, using a fresh baseline and cumulative records for your own setup.
