Lowering reference tension generally lets the finished stringbed deflect more and may lengthen ball-string dwell time, while raising it generally makes the stringbed firmer. ITF research also shows that even large tension changes may produce smaller ball-speed differences than players expect, and players can adapt by changing swing speed or racquet-face angle. A crisp feel at higher tension is not the same as directional accuracy, and elasticity at lower tension does not automatically mean every ball travels farther. Material stiffness, pattern, contact point, and impact conditions all matter.

Try these steps in order

  1. In the two sessions prior to the change, hit the target area 20 times each using the same balls and court, and count out-of-baseline, net, and left/right errors separately.
  2. With the racquet, string product, actual gauge, stringer, and prestretch fixed, change only the reference tension by a small margin in the next stringing job. Do not change multiple variables at once.
  3. Record the machine's settings and units, and measure the estimated current tension three times using the app at a set time, recording the median. Do not expect the two numbers to be identical.
  4. Record impact feel, launch angle, and depth during the first 30 minutes. Recheck predictability, fatigue, and string movement after two or three uses to separate the fresh-string effect from the response that persists.
  5. Power is defined as a combination of depth and swing effort unless ball speed is measured directly, and control is defined not merely by feel, but by target zone hit rate and direction of error.
  6. If the results are mixed, keep one comparison racquet at the original setting and postpone further changes until the next stringing job.

Bottom line

Treat higher- and lower-tension effects as broad tendencies. Use a controlled A/B record on your own racquet to verify changes in actual errors and required effort.
