A 1-Minute Log That Makes Your Next Restring Easier
“It felt fine last time” is not enough to reproduce the next stringing job. A 1-minute log keeps the process setting, current condition, and on-court result separate while preserving the minimum useful context for the next choice.

Recent match wins and losses, physical condition, and expectations for new equipment can easily alter your memory of shots. Also, mixing machine-set reference tension, the app's estimated current tension, and stringbed stiffness in a single string tension column leads to misreading loss trends or shop reproducibility. Since strings change over time and with use, and there is a repeatability error in the measurements themselves, you cannot determine replacement timing based solely on the date or interpret small numerical differences as absolute performance. Good logs record the process, measurement, usage, environment, and results in short but independent fields, and do not estimate unknown values.
Try these steps in order
- Store the racquet ID, exact model and generation, head size, and pattern. Label two racquets of the same model A and B, and record attachments or changes such as grips, dampeners, and customization.
- Record the string brand, product, color, actual diameter in mm, and full-bed or hybrid orientation. Give the mains and crosses reference tensions with their lb or kgf units, plus the stringer, machine, and pre-stretch, in separate fields.
- Record the stringing completion date and time and the baseline measurement taken at your chosen point before first play. Store an app’s estimated current tension with the device, inputs, and repeated readings; store stringbed stiffness with its own device and unit in another field.
- For each session, add elapsed calendar days, cumulative playing time, practice or match intensity, ball model and freshness, court type, indoor/outdoor setting, and temperature. This does not claim every variable was controlled; it preserves the major potential confounders.
- Record depth, direction and net errors, launch angle, observed spin, impact feel, and predictability with a consistent scale and short notes. For pain, add location, onset, duration, and whether play stopped rather than storing a score alone.
- Link photos showing string movement and return, notching, fraying, and break location. Classify the replacement reason as breakage, erratic response, discomfort, or match preparation, then write one sentence saying what single variable will change next and why.
