Lowering machine-set reference tension tends to change stringbed stiffness and launch response, but the size of the change depends on the polyester product’s stiffness, diameter, friction, the pattern, and head size. Some experiments found smaller ball-speed differences than players expected, while directional and spin results also depended on test conditions. A lower machine setting does not guarantee tension maintenance or comfort, and notching and reduced elastic recovery can progress independently. Extreme professional settings are context-dependent examples, not personal prescriptions.

Try these steps in order

  1. Record the current racquet, polyester product, actual diameter, machine-set reference tension, stringing method, stringing date, and cumulative playing time. If an aged setup already responds erratically, create a fresh baseline before comparing.
  2. Choose one test goal: easier depth, a particular launch angle, more spin margin, or impact feel. Define a numeric success criterion and do not ask one setup to solve several problems at once.
  3. Check the frame’s recommended range and the string manufacturer’s instructions. Lower the reference tension of only one identical spare racquet by a small amount, and leave the others at the established setting using string from the same reel.
  4. Match the elapsed time from stringing completion, then record the setup value and the first estimated current tension or stringbed stiffness separately. Do not compare absolute app readings across different racquet models; follow each racquet’s own trend.
  5. With the same balls and court, alternate serves, centered-contact rallies, full-swing crosscourt shots, and defensive blocks. Record net and long errors, trajectory peak, post-bounce height, directional misses, and confidence in the swing.
  6. Change racquet order across two or three similar sessions, tracking cumulative time and notching as well. Consider another small step only if the desired result repeats; return to baseline if discomfort or loss of control appears.

Low-tension polyester is a controlled option, not a trend with a universal right answer. Keep a reference racquet and record the machine setting, estimated condition, errors, and wear to learn the tendency in your own swing.
