Sound-based measurements estimate current tension by identifying resonances in stringbed vibration. The signal can be affected by how the hand supports the racquet, string material and condition, the tapping tool, room reverberation, conversation, and machine noise. Incorrect head size, pattern, gauge, or string inputs can also change the converted result even when the vibration is captured correctly. The reading is neither a direct measurement of force in each string nor a complete stringbed-stiffness measurement, and one reading cannot validate the stringing machine’s reference tension. Establish repeatability before interpreting a trend.

Try these steps in order

  1. Choose a quiet indoor space and keep the phone case, microphone orientation, and phone-to-racquet distance consistent. Close doors or windows if they introduce changing noise.
  2. Support the racquet lightly at the same location and keep accessories such as a dampener in the same condition. Do not measure immediately after pressing on the stringbed by hand.
  3. Recheck the exact model’s head size, mains × crosses pattern, string product and actual diameter, and mains/crosses settings.
  4. Tap the same central location several times with similar force and collect three consecutive valid readings. If one differs sharply, retain it as an outlier and repeat the sequence rather than accepting or deleting it silently.
  5. In one session, test how much racquet orientation or support method changes the reading. Then select one standard procedure and document it.
  6. Interpret later values by combining change from the same-condition baseline with the spread of repeated readings, not by using one absolute value. Create a new baseline if the app, device, or algorithm version changes.

Bottom line

A good measurement is defined by a repeatable procedure, not one supposedly perfect answer. Record inputs, room, support, excitation point, and timing, then use the median within that procedure.
