Multifilament strings are often nylon-based constructions made from many bonded fibers. Product variation is substantial, but they generally target a more elastic, softer response than polyester. Using the same machine setting as a familiar polyester does not guarantee the same stringbed stiffness, launch angle, or estimated-current-tension trend. Control also depends on contact point, swing path, depth, and repeatable directional error—not stiffness alone. A few long balls therefore do not prove that every multifilament is uncontrollable or that maximum tension is the only answer.

Try these steps in order

  1. For the old and new setups, record the racquet, exact product, color, diameter in mm, stringing date, mains/crosses settings, and cumulative playing time. Mark material and freshness as simultaneous differences when comparing an aged polyester with a fresh multifilament.
  2. At a defined elapsed time after stringing, record the app’s estimated current tension or a separate stringbed-stiffness reading as the new multifilament baseline. Whether it matches machine-set reference tension is not a quality test.
  3. After an adequate warm-up, use the same balls and court for centered-contact rallies, depth targets, directional targets, and serves. Record long, wide, and net errors, launch angle, and whether you shortened the swing.
  4. Use video or coach feedback to see whether contact is late or the racquet face opens. Also check whether predictability declined because the equipment change caused you to reduce the swing excessively.
  5. If the same errors recur across several sessions, keep the multifilament and diameter fixed and adjust only machine-set reference tension by a small amount at the next stringing job. Alternatively, keep the setting fixed and test a thicker gauge, but do not make both changes together.
  6. Each session, record fraying, notching, string movement and return, impact feel, and predictability. Find where desired depth and comfort coexist, and compare usable response and replacement timing with the previous polyester baseline.

Bottom line

Multifilament control is found at a setup where the swing remains repeatable and errors remain stable, not at the highest number. Match product, diameter, and freshness, then change one variable at a time to refine response without making comfort a guarantee.
