Pre-stretch is a stringing variable used to address initial elongation, not a feature that permanently eliminates tension loss. Manual pre-stretching and a machine percentage setting are different procedures, so a simple yes/no record is not enough for reproduction.

Strings can exhibit creep—continued deformation under load—and stress relaxation over time. Pre-stretch attempts to address part of the initial change by loading the string before mounting or during the machine pull, but elasticity, feel, and damage risk can vary with material, product, amount, and duration. A pre-stretch percentage is not added to machine-set reference tension to obtain final tension. Track estimated current tension or stringbed stiffness over time instead, and do not assume that pre-stretch improves lifespan or performance for every material.

Try these steps in order

  1. Check the exact string product, actual diameter, and the manufacturer’s pre-stretch permissions, recommendations, and cautions. If guidance is unavailable, do not apply an arbitrary high load; discuss the purpose with an experienced stringer.
  2. Choose one purpose, such as reducing rapid early change, making the initial feel more repeatable, or handling natural gut. Do not apply pre-stretch for the vague reason that it makes a setup “better.”
  3. For manual pre-stretch, record who performed it, for how long, and by what method. For machine pre-stretch, record the model, mode, and displayed percentage. Also record whether it was applied to mains, crosses, or both, plus each reference-tension setting.
  4. Prepare a no-pre-stretch comparison using the same frame, reel, and stringing conditions. Do not apply pre-stretch to every racquet at once and lose the control.
  5. From stringing completion, use the same schedule to measure the baseline, next-day, and post-play estimated current tension or stringbed stiffness. Keep different metrics and played/unplayed states separate, and check repeatability before interpreting the amount of decline.
  6. Record launch angle, impact feel, sound, predictability, notching, and time to breakage with cumulative playing time. If early tension maintenance looks better but desired elasticity or lifespan worsens, reconsider the amount of pre-stretch or whether to use it at the next stringing job.

Pre-stretch is a recordable process variable, not magic. Define method, amount, and direction, then compare tension maintenance, feel, and lifespan with an untreated control before judging the benefit.
