Why Can Two Racquets Feel Different at the Same 50 lb?
Two racquets strung at 50 lb can still produce different finished stringbed stiffness and launch response. A 50 lb machine setting is a stringing reference, not an absolute stiffness value that makes different racquet systems identical.

Start with this check
Head size and shape, mains and crosses lengths, pattern density, frame deformation, string material and diameter, stringing machine, and clamping process all influence finished stringbed stiffness. Machine-set reference tension remains a historical process value, while the stringbed’s current state changes over time; an app’s estimated current tension also depends on racquet and string inputs and measurement conditions. Stringbed stiffness separately describes how the whole stringbed resists a defined load. Even similar-looking numbers cannot be stored interchangeably.
Try these steps in order
- List the exact model/generation, head size, pattern, weight and balance, and attachments such as grips and dampeners of the two racquets to be compared side by side in a table. If only the model names are identical, leave manufacturing variations as a possibility.
- Match the string product, color, actual diameter, reel or set, stringing date, stringer/machine, and mains and crosses settings. Fix these conditions as much as possible when examining frame differences.
- Record the stringing completion time for each racquet and take three measurements at the same elapsed time, temperature, and measurement location. If the estimated current tension and stringbed stiffness are different types of outputs, store them in different columns.
- Use the same balls and court and perform centered-contact rallies, depth targets, serves, and defensive slices in the same order. Record launch angle, net and long errors, impact feel, and sound separately instead of reducing the result to “solid.”
- Reverse racquet order at least twice, and reduce expectation bias by including periods when the hitter does not know whether the racquet is A or B. Postpone a conclusion when physical condition differs substantially between days.
- Do not force different models toward identical measurements merely because one feels different. Make small later adjustments within each racquet’s own stringing jobs, and continue tracking against that racquet’s baseline.
Bottom line
The same 50 lb can describe the same stringing reference without guaranteeing the same stringbed. Compare the complete system—frame, string, stringing process, and elapsed time—not one number.
