Why Does the Ball Feel Stiffer in Winter and Fly Longer in Summer?
A stiffer feel in winter or longer shots in summer does not prove that tension is the only cause. The ball, court, strings, storage conditions, and your physical readiness change together, so record actual conditions rather than the season alone.

Temperature exposure can affect ball response, string-material behavior, and grip feel; warm-up and movement also differ on cold days. The direction and size of change vary by material, and indoor/outdoor setting, ball type, and wind introduce additional variables, so feel alone cannot tell you how tension changed. Avoid universal formulas such as adding a few lb in summer and subtracting a few lb in winter.
Try these steps in order
- For each session, record temperature, indoor or outdoor setting, court surface, exact ball and whether it is new, and wind. Also record where the racquet was stored immediately beforehand and for how long, separating storage exposure from court conditions.
- Allow the racquet and ball to acclimate to the playing area, then judge them after the same dynamic warm-up. Do not diagnose the equipment from the bodily sensation of the first five cold shots.
- Use centered-contact rallies and depth targets, counting net, short, and long errors separately. Put impact feel, grip slipperiness, and physical stiffness in a different column from ball outcomes.
- If you track estimated current tension, take three readings with the same device, inputs, location, and temperatures as similar as practical. Follow the repeatable trend within one setup rather than comparing absolute values from different seasons.
- For a seasonal comparison, keep one racquet at the existing setting as the control and adjust only one spare by a small amount. Do not change string material or balls at the same time.
- Save a separate seasonal reference setting only if the same error pattern repeats across several sessions under similar conditions. Distinguish machine-set reference tension from the estimated value at measurement time, and recheck the pattern the following year.
