Do You Need a New Reference Tension for a Different Polyester String?
Two products labeled “polyester” need not produce the same feel or maintain tension the same way at 50 lb. Differences in composition, construction, shape, surface, and actual diameter mean each model needs its own reference setting.

Start with this check
Polyester, multifilament, and nylon are broad material groups, not standards for dynamic stiffness, friction, elastic recovery, or change over time. Marketing words such as “soft,” “power,” and “control” are not common measurement units across brands either. Two products can differ in finished stringbed stiffness and estimated-current-tension trend even at the same machine-set reference tension. An unfamiliar initial feel therefore cannot provide a one-step formula for the required adjustment.
Try these steps in order
- From official product information, verify the exact name, version, color, material group, and diameter in mm for the current and candidate strings. Do not merge a similarly named previous generation or different color into the same SKU.
- Summarize the machine-set reference tension, stringing date, stringer/machine, pre-stretch, cumulative playtime, and fresh baseline measurements of the existing racquet. If the only comparison is a worn string, indicate the aging effect separately.
- For the first playtest, keep the same frame and hold gauge and reference tension as constant as safely practical to observe the product difference. If that conflicts with manufacturer guidance or the frame range, or the old string caused discomfort, choose a more conservative starting point with the stringer.
- After stringing, record estimated current tension or stringbed stiffness at the same elapsed time and under the same conditions, storing different metrics in separate columns. Numerical agreement with machine-set reference tension is not a quality goal.
- In the same order, perform centered-contact rallies, depth targets, serves, and defensive blocks. Record launch angle, net and long errors, directional misses, impact feel, and sound; reverse order in later sessions to reduce first-impression bias.
- Each session, record cumulative time, notching, return after string movement, and erratic response to compare both fresh feel and usable life. At the next stringing job, keep the product fixed and adjust only reference tension by a small amount.
Bottom line
A shared material label does not guarantee a shared setup. Exact SKUs and diameters, matched freshness, and separate baseline measurements let you assess the product difference first and the effect of a later tension adjustment second.
