Machine-set reference tension is an input to the stringing process. Whole-stringbed stiffness after completion and estimated current tension over time vary with the frame-and-string system. The new racquet’s weight, balance, swingweight, and grip can also change contact point and ball depth, so every unfamiliar sensation cannot be assigned to tension. Previous numbers are useful context, but the exact model’s manufacturer range and a new-frame baseline are still required.

Try these steps in order

  1. Make a table for the old and new racquets showing exact model and generation, head size, pattern, length, and recommended tension range. Record weight, balance, and attachments as well so their effect on the hitting motion remains visible.
  2. Recover the exact string product, actual diameter, color, stringing machine, mains/crosses settings, and cumulative playing time from the old racquet. Leave unknown fields unconfirmed rather than estimating them.
  3. For the first stringing job, keep the familiar string and gauge when practical, but choose a conservative starting point with the stringer inside the new frame’s official range and model-specific instructions. Do not blindly copy the previous setting or apply an automatic correction formula.
  4. Prepare both racquets with similarly fresh strings and take each baseline measurement after the same elapsed time from stringing completion. Do not put an app’s estimated current tension and stringbed stiffness from a separate device on one scale.
  5. Alternate short rallies, depth targets, serves, and defensive shots with the same balls and court. For each racquet, record launch angle, net and long errors, centered-contact rate, impact feel, and swing timing.
  6. After at least two adaptation sessions with the new frame, select one recurring issue and adjust machine-set reference tension by a small amount at the next stringing job. Keep the old racquet as a control and do not simultaneously change lead, grip, or string material.

Transferred tension is a first hypothesis, not an answer to copy. Control the racquet specifications and string choice, then create a baseline and error map for each frame so the next adjustment remains explainable.
