Profile facts and early tour titles
Born in Odesa, Ukraine, on 15 May 2000, Yastremska is listed at 175 cm and plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand. Her career-high WTA singles ranking is No. 21, reached on 20 January 2020.
She won her first WTA singles title in Hong Kong in 2018 and added Hua Hin and Strasbourg in 2019. Those titles and the major semifinal in 2024 belong to different stages. A career-best ranking alone obscures the years between them.
Three wins before the main draw began
Yastremska won three qualifying matches at the 2024 Australian Open, beating Maya Joint in the final round. In the main draw she defeated Markéta Vondroušová, Varvara Gracheva, Emma Navarro and Victoria Azarenka.
She then beat Linda Nosková to reach her first major semifinal, where she lost to Zheng Qinwen. Five main-draw wins followed three in qualifying. The final round reached is the same label as for a direct entrant, but the total workload differs.
Two major champions posed different questions
Wins over Vondroušová and Azarenka can be grouped as victories over major champions, but the opponents have different handedness and ways of using the court. Compare return starting positions and the wing on which the first crosscourt exchange develops.
To assess attacking choices, include contact conditions alongside winners and errors. A prepared change of direction and one attempted while pushed back by depth carry different risks. That distinction explains more than the outcome alone.
Keep a target while the incoming ball changes
Ask a partner to vary the height of balls to the same side while you maintain a broad crosscourt target. Prepare compactly against pace and create space with the feet against a slower ball. Avoid prescribing the same swing size and speed for every feed.
Every ten balls, record target depth and balance. Separate the task of creating winners from maintaining rally quality so that progress is observable. This is an editorial exercise, not a claim about Yastremska’s actual routine.
